1947年岡山県出身。1972年ドーンデザイン研究所を設立。
建築・鉄道車両・グラフィック・プロダクトなどさまざまなジャンルのデザインを行う。なかでもJR九州の駅舎、車両のデザインは、鉄道ファンの枠を越え広く注目を集め、ブルネル賞、毎日デザイン賞、菊池寛賞を受賞。主なデザイン作品に、JR九州の新幹線、クルーズトレイン「ななつ星in 九州」、「36ぷらす3」、「A列車で行こう」、「JR博多駅」、「JR大分駅」、「JR三角駅（改修）」、シークルーズ「マリソル」・「エルミラ」他、球磨川復興事業「HASSENBA」会議室、東急「ザ・ロイヤルエクスプレス」、東京都豊島区「IKEBUS」、東京都「TODEN」。
JR北海道の観光列車「赤い星・青い星」が現在進行中。
